My name is Michael Hughes. I am a fourth year Stenden South Africa student. I am currently doing my internship at the Disaster Risk Management Centre for the City of Cape Town. I have worked under different portfolios whilst on my internship. Currently I am working under the public awareness portfolio, which involves many different aspects. It has been a great experience working under this portfolio as it has given me the opportunity to engage with communities in regards to flood safety and fire safety, especially in informal settlements which tend to be more vulnerable to disasters. Overall the highlight of my internship has been going into communities that are at risk and sharing preventative measures to decrease risk, I really enjoy being out in the field. Overall the BBA degree has prepared me in terms of having knowledge and this combined with new experiences on my internship has led to me developing skills.
