Mrs. Rene Oosthuizen - Academic Dean
Rene is currently studying towards her Ph.D. The study focuses on an explorative and descriptive objective research to examine factors influencing the integration of disaster risk management into development planning in the South African local government sphere with specific reference to the Sarah Baartman District Municipality. The study will evaluate to what extent disaster risk management have been integrated into all facets of provincial, district and local government development planning. Rene holds a Master's degree in Public Management and a BA Honours Degree in Public Administration. Rene's degrees and subsequent work experience focused extensively on the implementation and assessment of Social and Economic Development policies, and Advanced Strategic Management as effective tools to ensure sustainable service delivery.
In 2009, Rene was employed as a lecturer in the Department of Public Management at Tshwane University of Technology (TUT). Prior to that, she was employed as a lecturer at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) for six years. Her areas of specialisation include Advanced Strategic Management, Public Policy Management, Programme and Project Management, and Research and Information Management.
Rene is an academic and policy analysis/development researcher with experience in conducting interviews, report writing, policy analysis, social and economic research and development monitoring. She has designed and implemented the above in the academic, non-governmental and governmental sectors, specialising in social and economic development issues.
Mr. Masterson Chipumuro - Senior Lecturer
Mr. Chipumuro is currently studying at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, for a Doctor of Business Administration (DBA). He completed his studies with Azaliah University in 2002 and graduated with a Master of Business Administration (MBA). Mr. Chipumuro completed his Bachelor of Technology in Education Management with Technikon Pretoria, now the Tshwane University of Technology. He also studied a Diploma in Education majoring in Mathematics with the University of Zimbabwe, after completing Advanced level certificate in Mathematics and Accounting.
Mr. Chipumuro joined Stenden South Arica in February 2016. Previously he was working with the department of Education, to assist with mathematics and physical science teaching in the coastal schools for 3 years. Mr. Chipumuro also worked in the capacity of Human Resource and Marketing Manager for 43 Air School for 3 years. Previously he was Dean of the faculty of Management and information Technology with the Women's University in Africa based in Harare Zimbabwe. Mr. Chipumuro was a prominent part-time lecturer for CACC learning Zimbabwe institute in Corporate Finance, Marketing, Strategic Management and Reseach Methods. He has taught at the Institute of MArkting Management (IMM) subjects at Jeppe College of Commerce and Computers Pretoria South Africa as an approved IMM Lecturer for the college.
Currently, he holds the position of Senior Lecturer in the School of Disaster Management at Stenden South Africa and lecturers 1st year Research, 2nd year Research and Logistics, and 3rd year Research. Managing Climate Change, Strategic Management, and Finance Management.
Mrs. Tamaryn Friderichs - Senior Lecturer
Mrs. Friderichs completed her studies at Rhodes Univerisity in 2010 with a B.Com (Masters) in Economics. Thereafter she was employed to lecture at Rhodes University in the Economics Department, which she did for the past few years. Tamaryn is currently a Senior Lecturer in the Disaster Management School at Stenden South Africa. Growing up in the Eastern Cape - Tamaryn loves this beautiful province. She finds helping students achieve their goals very rewarding and plans to add to the body of knowledge on Disaster Management through further research.
Mr. Pieter Smit - Practical Training Coordinator
Pieter Smit holds a BEd (Hons), THED (Pretoria) and a diploma from CEFT (Pretoria), is a member of the SA Council for Counsellors, a member of the International Coaching Federation and also holds a Captains rank in SANDF (Reserve Force). Pieter has forty years experience in education and training and developed the practical component of the Disaster Management Degree.
Pieter's primary tasks are the implementation of the practical component, coordinating field visits and career observation as well as the character building and fitness components. Pieter is also responsible for the Career Development programme of the Disaster Management students.
Mr. Ruan Cannon - Practical Instructor
Ruan is currently in his second year of studying towards obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Management through the University of South Africa.
Ruan joined the Safety and Security industry in 2003 and completed numerous courses specifically related to the industry. He later joined the American K9 Detection Unit in Afghanistan before completing a practical course in the same field where he obtained a first aid level 4, amongst others. After having gained vast experience in the safety and security industry, he joined the Disaster Management School early in 2016 as the practical instructor and is responsible for developing, implementing and reviewing the practical component to ensure that it remains relevant.
