This practical aspect of Stenden’s courses is an essential part of the learning experience and is a highlight of each student’s time at Stenden South Africa.
Stenden South Africa provides the perfect place for this practical experience at MyPond – a commercially operated hotel that will thrust students into the heart of all aspects of hospitality and introduce them into a working environment that upholds the current market standards and trends.
The working force at MyPond is divided between the different years with first year students forming the team of operational employees, second year students forming the team of supervisors and third year students assuming the roles of managers. During their first year, students will learn operational skills from second and third year students and will spend time in the Food and Beverages and Rooms sections of the hotel.
Food and Beverage is a pivotal part of the practical experience as it enables students to develop personal and technical skills through food and beverage serving, the production of food and beverages and other supporting front and back of house processes. The rooms section is just as important and consists of Housekeeping, Front Office and Reservations with each first year student getting a second year coach and a third year manager.
The second year of practical training holds an emphasis on training and coaching the first year students by executing supervisor and managerial duties in various departments; Front Office Department, Housekeeping Department, Human Resources Department, Sales and Marketing Department and Restaurant / Kitchen.
There are also a number of practical instructors who will observe the processes and assist where necessary but ultimately it’s up to each of the different year students to represent the department and work as a team in order for its collective success. It’s up to the students to make the most of this practical resource afforded to them and learn as much as they can to become successful hospitality ambassadors.
