Over the past year alone, the campus has hosted approximately 250 Grand Tour students, contributing to the vibrant cultural exchange that has characterised the institution throughout its 25 years of operation.
The opportunity to study one or two minor modules abroad is known as the Grand Tour. Through this model, students from affiliated Stenden campuses including Thailand, Bali, Italy, Aruba, and The Netherlands complete specialised minors in a different country while continuing their degree within the same academic structure offered at Stenden South Africa. The programme allows students to gain international exposure without interrupting their academic progression. Local Stenden students likewise can study at one of these international campuses, reinforcing a strong culture of global mobility.
South Africa remains one of the most sought-after destinations within this network. Students are drawn to the country’s cultural diversity, natural landscapes, and dynamic hospitality sector. Popular minors offered at the South African campus include Wine Business, Wildlife Management, Lodge Management, Conflict Resolution, Social Entrepreneurship, Hunger Solutions, Change and Innovation, Education in South Africa, and Event Management.
The experience begins with a carefully curated orientation programme designed to introduce students to South African life. A highlight is the Traditional Food Evening, where students are welcomed with authentic local dishes such as bobotie, mifino, mageu, and homemade ginger beer. These meals provide insight into South Africa’s heritage and the communal spirit expressed through food.
Students also participate in a township tour, offering perspective on local history and community life, as well as an information market that connects them with businesses and services in and around Port Alfred. Students enrolled in the Wine Business minor travel to renowned wine farms in Cape Town and the Western Cape, gaining first-hand insight into viticulture and the global wine industry. Those studying Wildlife Management or Lodge Management experience conservation and eco-tourism environments, while minors such as Hunger Solutions and Social Entrepreneurship connect students with social development initiatives addressing real community challenges.
Outside of their academic commitments, students explore some of South Africa’s most iconic destinations. Popular excursions include Addo Elephant National Park, the Cango Caves in Oudtshoorn, hiking in Hogsback, and adventures along the Garden Route, including Tsitsikamma. These experiences enrich both their academic and personal journeys.
