Hoops for Hunger Charity Basketball Tournament & Costume Competition

On the 16th of November, an international hunger awareness charity fundraising event took place at Rengers Sports Hall, Leeuwarden. This 24-team basketball tournament was to benefit the Port Alfred Soup Kitchen across the street from NHL Stenden’s Grand Tour campus in South Africa. The Universities Fighting World Hunger the Netherlands (UFWH NL) student association members from NHL Stenden worked with local community partners from ARIS Leeuwarden, Leeuwarden Student Sport, Leeuwarden Student City, Notiz Hotel, Restaurant Wannee, Green Joy and the Klim Café to hold this event.

Students, teachers and staff from NHL Stenden organized themselves into 24 teams of 4/5 persons to play in this 3X3 mixed (male/female) teams basketball tournament. On the night of November the 16th, the Leeuwarden ARIS professional basketball players conducted a group warm-up for all players and then served as referees for the tournament. Representatives from the planning committee erer present at the awards ceremonies after the group round and at the end of the tournament.

Proceeds of the funds raised were handed over by Alina Marten to Craig Ellis of the Port Alfred Soup Kitchen on the 3 February. A total of R28 000 was handed over. Thank you to the campus at NHL Stenden for this generous donation.
